Can a sub-ticket be escalated again?
We recently received a great question from one of our customers:
Can an Escalator sub-ticket be escalated again to create another linked ticket?
Yes, it can.
By default, Escalator hides the escalation options on tickets that have already been escalated. This helps prevent agents from accidentally creating additional levels of tickets when the workflow only requires a single handoff.
For workflows that involve several teams or stages, you can allow an escalated ticket to be escalated again. This creates a “grandchild” ticket while preserving the relationship between each ticket in the chain.
Support more complex Zendesk workflows
Multi-level escalations are useful when resolving a request requires several separate handoffs. For example:
- Customer Support escalates a technical issue to a specialist team
- The specialist team then escalates part of the investigation to Engineering
- Each team works from its own Zendesk ticket while retaining visibility of the related parent, child and sibling tickets
Escalator displays these relationships directly in the Zendesk sidebar, making it easier for agents to follow the complete escalation path without searching for related tickets manually.
Choose which workflows allow further escalation
The option to create grandchild tickets is configured separately for each escalation. This means you can keep straightforward workflows limited to one parent and child ticket while allowing additional escalation levels where they are genuinely useful.
Look for Allow the escalated ticket to be escalated again (i.e. create a grandchild) within the relevant escalation configuration.

For more information, see the Other escalation settings section of the Escalator user guide.
